National Assembly of Pakistan

Ø The National Assembly is the ‘lower house’ of the bicameral parliament of Pakistan.

Ø The National Assembly is a democratically elected body consisting of a total of 342 members

Ø The members are referred to as Members of the National Assembly (MNAs),

Ø Among 342 members, 272 are directly elected members.

Ø 70 seats are reserved for women and religious minorities

Ø Members are elected through the first-past-the-post (that is won by the candidate receiving more votes than any others) system

Ø A political party must secure 172 seats to obtain and preserve a majority

Ø According to the constitution, the 70 seats reserved for women and religious minorities are allocated to the political parties according to their proportional representation.

Ø Each National Assembly is formed for a five-year term, commencing from the date of the first sitting, after which it is automatically dissolved

Ø Election for 14th National Assembly was held on 11 May 2013.

Ø Members of 14th National Assembly took oath on June 1, 2013
